Poor sleep causes significant memory loss, especially in the elderly. A study found that while we sleep our brain produces important waves that are vital for storing new memories. The brain waves are said to transfer memories from the hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex where they are stored as long term memories. Getting little sleep will cause the memories to stay at the hippocampus resulting in memory loss and forgetfulness.
