Brain research has discovered that child abuse inhibits brain development and it can be permanent. One theory explains that because of the stress that neglect and abuse has on a child, the brain learns to strengthen the pathways among neurons involved in fear response. Neglect also keeps the child from experiencing stimuli that would activate the regions of the brain involved with cognition.
