A diet high in sugar reduces the production of BDNF, a brain chemical responsible for memory and learning. Low levels of BDNF have also been linked to depression, dementia, other mood disorders. Though more research is being conducted to further prove this theory, there is no question that consuming too much sugar has negative affects on mental health.
