MRI scans have show that a single night of sleep deprivation will trigger regions of the brain associated with assessing positive outcomes while regions of the brain associated with assessing negative outcomes were inactive. The study found that people that were sleep deprived were more sensitive to the possibility of monetary gain. So sleep deprived habitual gamblers not only fight their addiction but their tired brain’s tendency to seek gain.
