Dr. Song and his team came up with a strategy for tracing the life cycle of precursor cells in the hippocampus where stem cells give rise to new neurons. The team found that a single stem cell is capable of repairing itself and generates several new stem cells. This discovery has encouraged researchers to find ways in which they can intervene to manipulate and increase numbers instead of losing them as we do with age. This discovery may lead to the development of regenerative medicine for patients with schizophrenia and other degenerative diseases.
