World Speed Memory Championship Rome 24-25, 2011

For the seventh consecutive time Ramón Campayo was proclaimed World Champion in Speed Memory in the world championship held on September 24-25 at Circolo Villa Spada, Roma, in what was undoubtedly the highest level, most disputed and most exciting competition in history. Given his poor state of health, Ramón had to rely on his experience and his performance was completely strategic. The champion focused on reaching a “decent” (according to him) score in 4 tests, and minimum scores in the 2 remaining tests (decimals and binary numbers in 1 second). With a multitude of nullified tries and with the use of the competition calculator to control Chus García, Ramón paced himself in order to win the championship without other pretentions.

World Speed Memory Championship Rome 24-25, 2011In second place, renewing her title as runner up, was Chus García, who set her own personal record on the 24th and even broke that new record in the finals on the 25th. The grand master Pedro Correa classified in third place thanks to an excellent performance which earned him the title “Grand Golden Master”.

Furthermore, four other new master titles were earned: Miguel Ángel Vergara earned the title of “Grand Silver Master”, and Álex Martínez, Alfonso Linares and Francisco Carlos Páez were named International Masters.
In the amateur competition, first place went to Sandra Ruiz, the daughter of International master José Ruiz, who was followed by the Italian memorizer Giuliani Migliarini.
Likewise, the Cuban champion Yusnier Viera gave a performance on the 24th in which he pulverized the world record for calendar calculation of the 365 days of 2011, by correctly writing the day of the week corresponding to each date while using a computer software program which showed flashes of the dates. His incredible time was 2’50”.
The German champion Ulrich Voight broke another world record by writing the first 100 digits of “pi” which a computer program showed in random order in just 39 seconds.
