Galileo Galilei

1564 -1642

Galileo was a mathematician and physicist whose theories about the universe antagonized the catholic church. He strongly supported the theory that the sun was at the center of the universe, not the earth. This irritate theologians and Galileo was sentenced to eternal house arrest. The church banned his books still after his death.

  • Galileo established the law of bodies which states that speed of a falling object is independent of its weight.
  • He demonstrated the law of projectiles where he observed that projectiles fall in a curved path.
  • By identifying the principle of flotation he was able to invent a thermometer
  • His observations of the moon and planets showed that they are natural like the earth and not supernatural bodies
