William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is widely recognized as one of the greatest English writers ever. He wrote a numerous amounts of poems and highly successful dramas including Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare caused a lot of controversy but it was accompanied with bountiful praise.

  • Besides the Bible, Shakespeare is the most quoted writer in the English language
  • Few people know that Shakespeare was also an actor. He performed before Queen Elizabeth I who was a great fan of his work.
  • Shakespeare came to write 37 plays and 154 sonnets
  • He invented 1700 of our mainstream words by changing nouns to verbs, adding prefixes and suffixes, and devising words  all his own
  • His work had a major impact on the future of theatre. He broadened expectations about what the use of characterization, language, genre, and plot can accomplish.
