Thomas Jefferson was one of the first and most passionate supporters for America’s independence from Great Britain.

  • Out of a committee of five men, Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write the first draft to the declaration of independence
  • He served as the second vice president from 1797 – 1801 and as third president from 1801 – 1809
  • During his term,he drastically cut government spending, reducing the national debt by 25 percent
  • in 1803, he purchased the Louisiana Territory from France doubling the size of the United States
