TOP 10 BRAIN FOODS TO INCREASE MEMORY

increase memory

Here is a list of my top 10 brain foods to increase memory.  When I was training for the USA Memory Championship in 2009 I lost 20 pounds, the reason why is because I was eating these brain foods.

1:  Whole Grains

increase memory

Your brain is like any other part of your body, it needs a steady supply of energy to function properly.  The ability to focus and concentrate comes from a steady and adequate supply of energy in the form of glucose and we can get this from whole grains.  To get this opt for things such as brown cereals, wheat bran or brown pasta.

2: Oily Fish

Essential fatty acids can not be made by the body and they must be obtained through a diet.  The most effective Omega 3’s occur in fish as EPA or DHA.  Good sources of this oily fish are salmon, trout, mackerel and herring. However if you are like me and allergic a great substitute is flax seed oil, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil, walnut oil, or an omega 3 pill.

3: Blueberries

increase memory

This is one of my favorites, eat more blueberries.  They have antioxidants that will be beneficial for your brain.  I would suggest getting a blueberry concentrate and mix that with some water so that you won’t have to eat 1,000 blueberries a day.

4: Tomatoes

increase memory

Maybe you haven’t heard of this one before?  Tomatoes protect against free radical damage to your cells that can lead to things like Dementia and Alzheimer’s.  So have some more tomatoes!!

5:  B6, B12 and Folic Acid

increase memory

There is a study with elderly patients, they gave one group B6, B12 and Folic Acid and the other group a placebo.  When this 2 year study was complete they found that the group who have been given b6, b12, and folic acid had significantly less brain shrinkage.

6: Walnuts

increase memory

Walnuts are the top nut for brain health.  They have a high concentration of DHA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid.  DHA has been shown to protect the brains of newborn babies and improve cognitive performance in adults.  Only 1/4 cup of walnuts provides nearly 100% of the recommended daily intake of DHA.

7: Avocado

increase memory

Avocados don’t get enough credit for being a great brain food.  The avocado is a fatty fruit and it promotes healthy blood flow.  This healthy blood flow helps to keep your blood pressure lower and that is great for cognitive function.

8: Dark Chocolate

increase memory

Great news!!! Studies show that 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce of dark chocolate is beneficial to your brain.  Dark chocolate has powerful antioxidant properties which is helpful to your brain and is a natural stimulant.

9: Broccoli

increase memory

It’s not everyone’s favorite food, but it is a great brain food.  Broccoli is a good source for Vitamin K, and that will increase your brain power.

10: Curry

increase memory

Curry has a spice in it called Turmeric. Turmeric is becoming one of the most popular brain foods.  Be careful though, a lot of people are taking this important brain food in a pill form, but that won’t give you the same benefits from it as being cooked in food.  When Turmeric is cooked in food it actually has a chemical reaction which will be more beneficial for your brain and your memory.

There it is, my top 10 brain foods to increase memory.  Your brain is like any other part of your body, you need to support it with good nutrition and exercise.  For more information on top brain foods to increase memory check out the link
